Who would believe that we are almost 6 months into another year. Unfortunately, the weather hasn’t improved, and many whanau are being severely impacted by extreme weather and the deteriorating economic situation. At times like this, organisations such as New Horizons Women’s Trust :Hine Kahukura are vital to supporting women, many who maybe struggling to continue their education or commence study. Following last year’s awards round the Trust embarked on an ambitious programme of work to address accessibility. This has included, the change in our funding cycle to make it more closely aligned with the academic year, revision of our application forms to simplify them and make them more user friendly and easy to access. We are please that this year applications will be able to be completed on a variety of devices including tablets and mobile phones. Alongside these chances we have started to deliver our Outreach programme whereby we are able to provide support to women to complete an application, including working with other organisations/groups, that are supporting women who could benefit from some financial support to study.
It is widely accepted that education of women is highly correlated with positive outcomes for their tamariki and whanau and each year we are privileged to hear the heart-warming stories of the impact of receiving an award. Of course none of this would be possible without the ongoing support of our sponsors and partners who we extend our thanks to.
And finally we would be grateful if our supporters would use their networks to spread the word or let us know of any organisation /group who may include women who might be interested in applying. This year’s award round opens on 17th July and close on the 16th August

Awardee Profile: Madi Salter
|
Madi Salter was a 2021 recipient of an Outward Bound Classic Award. This award covered the costs associated with attending a 21-day Outward Bound course in Anakiwi in the Marlborough Sounds.
Madi has a Bachelor of Art, majoring in Geography and Politics, and a Bachelor of Art (Hons) in Geography. She is currently studying towards a Masters of Public Policy at the University of Auckland.
Here's what Madi had to say about her Outward Bound experience:
|
"I would like to thank the New Horizons for Women Trust Hine Kahukura for the scholarship I received that allowed me to complete a Classic Course at Outward Bound in Anakiwa this past December. Outward Bound was no short of a once in a lifetime experience. Each day came a new challenge and, sometimes literally, a new mountain to climb.
This was simultaneously the hardest and best thing I have ever done. I would have considered myself a confident and driven person before this experience but the key thing I took away is that there is always more in me. As cliche as it sounds, I genuinely believe that nothing can stop me now. If you ever get the opportunity to do Outward Bound, I urge you to take it."

Sponsor Spotlight: Ngā Pae o te Māramatanga

Ngā Pae o te Māramatanga is New Zealand's Māori Centre of Research Excellence hosted by The University of Auckland. Ngā Pae o te Māramatanga partners with research entities, conducting research of relevance to Māori communities and is an important vehicle by which Aotearoa New Zealand continues to be a key player in global Indigenous research and affairs. The centre's research is driven by its vision of creating the foundations for flourishing Māori futures and it is focused on bringing positive change and transformation to the nation, and the wider world.
Each year, since 2016, Ngā Pae o te Māramatanga and New Horizons for Women Trust: Hine Kahukura have collaborated to sponsor a Wāhine Ora Research Award. The name Wāhine Ora depicts the wellbeing, mana and wairua of Māori and their whānau and the award aims to support research that benefits Māori women, girls and/or whānau in Aotearoa New Zealand.
This year, we are excited to announce that, through this partnership, we will be offering two Wāhine Ora Research Awards. We truly value this partnership and look forward to seeing its continued benefit to the award recipients, their whānau and wider community.
