As we come to the end of another year we reflect on another successful year and look forward to what 2025 has in store for us.

The highlights of 2024 included our award ceremonies which were held in February and March and in addition to our wonderful awardees and their friends and whanau we were also thrilled to host a good number of our sponsors and past trustees. As always we came away from the ceremonies motivated by the inspiring stories of our awardees and with the knowledge that our mahi is as relevant today as it ever was. The next round of award ceremonies will be held in February and March 2025. If you are considering sponsoring an award or becoming a donor or just like to see the fruits of the Trusts efforts, we invite you to attend a ceremony so you too can see for yourself the difference you can make to these women and their whanau.

The trust has had a number of personnel changes this year with the resignation of two trustees and the retirement of our immediate past president Gail Campbell. We are grateful to Gail for here continued interest in and support of the Trust. In November we formally appointed and welcomed Dr Alison Kuiper to the Trust. Alison brings with her a wealth of experience in governance, and we have already benefited from her guidance and wisdom.

The biggest challenge this year has been that associated with the economic situation in Aotearoa , New Zealand. While the demand for our assistance grows securing funding which would help meet some of this demand has been limited, However, we are hopeful that things improve in 2025 as we continue our drive for funds.

Finally, a big thank you to our volunteers, sponsors and donors, we couldn’t do what we do without you. We look forward to your ongoing support in 2025.

Spotlight on an Award: Chenery Memorial Trust

We are incredibly grateful to the Chenery Memorial Trust for their unwavering support of the trusr through the Chenery Memorial Trust Second-chance Education Award.

The Chenery Memorial Trust was established in 1976 thanks to the vision and generosity of the late Hilda Chenery, who named the Trust in honor of her parents. Hilda, who passed away in 1994 at the remarkable age of 100, left most of her estate to the Trust, ensuring her legacy would continue to empower others. The Chenery family’s name was long associated with VVA Chenery Ltd, a respected plumbing firm, and their commitment to supporting education lives on.

Since 2011, the Chenery Memorial Trust has sponsored $25,500 worth of education awards through New Horizons for Women Trust: Hine Kahukura. These awards provide vital opportunities for wāhine pursuing second-chance education, helping them overcome barriers and achieve their aspirations.

The Trust is administered by Newmarket Rotary, and their partnership with New Horizons has been instrumental in enabling us to deliver meaningful support to our scholarship recipients.

As we close out another year, we extend our heartfelt thanks to the Chenery Memorial Trust for their incredible contributions. Their generosity continues to make a profound impact on the lives of the wāhine we serve, and we are honoured to have them as part of our journey.

Her Story: Hailey Smith

Award: Education Award Sponsored by Te Pūkenga – Toi Ohomai Business Division – L7
Studies: Bachelor of Nursing

This year, Hailey Smith, recipient of the Education Award Sponsored by Te Pūkenga – Toi Ohomai, has made incredible strides in her journey toward becoming a nurse. Her resilience, dedication, and passion for supporting others shine through as she reflects on her experiences in 2024.

A Year of Highlights

A highlight of Hailey’s year was her three-week placement at a rest home, where she gained valuable skills and formed meaningful connections with the residents. This hands-on experience solidified her passion for nursing, as she witnessed the critical role nurses play in promoting health and well-being.

“It was an honour to support residents in a vulnerable state while providing empathy and kindness to improve their moment,” Hailey shared. Drawing on her own personal experiences of being in and out of hospitals, she was able to empathise deeply with the residents and use her knowledge to offer them the best care possible.

Her placement allowed her to integrate the theoretical aspects of her degree into real-world practice, which she found both rewarding and enjoyable. Hailey reflected that this experience, along with her studies, has helped her grow personally and professionally, giving her confidence and excitement for what lies ahead.

Overcoming Challenges

Hailey’s journey has not been without challenges. She has faced ongoing struggles with her mental health, including anxiety and self-doubt, which made balancing her studies and health particularly difficult.

“There has been blood, sweat, and tears throughout this year, but I am proud of myself for not giving up,” Hailey said. With the unwavering support of her whānau and friends, she successfully completed her first year of nursing.

Despite the hurdles, Hailey has found renewed purpose in her degree. “This journey has shown me the importance of having something to fight for. Nursing has become ‘my thing,’ and it motivates me to get out of bed and continue fighting my illnesses every day,” she shared.

The Impact of the Award

The support from her award has been instrumental in Hailey’s success this year. The funding enabled her to purchase essential equipment, such as a stethoscope and blood pressure cuff, that she will use throughout her nursing career. It also covered costs for textbooks and online training subscriptions required for her studies.

“This award has removed the financial barriers I initially faced and allowed me to focus on managing both my studies and my health needs,” Hailey expressed.

Looking Ahead

With two years remaining in her Bachelor of Nursing programme, Hailey is determined to achieve her goal of becoming a Registered Nurse. She aspires to work in paediatrics, where she can support young people navigating similar challenges to those she has experienced.

“A massive thank you to everyone involved in providing these awards. I am incredibly grateful and would not have made it this far without your help.”

Deputy Chair Election

At the recent face-to-face meeting in Christchurch, the Trust proudly appointed Frances Sheriff as Deputy Chairwoman. With over three years of dedicated service to the Trust as a Trustee, she brings a deep passion for improving the lives of wāhine through education, innovation, and research.

Reflecting on her time with the Trust, Frances has been inspired by the resilience and determination of the awardees whose lives have been transformed through the Trust’s support. “Becoming Deputy Chairwoman feels like a natural progression,” she shares. “I am excited to embrace this new chapter and support the continued growth and success of the Trust.”

Her vision for the future includes expanding the Trust’s reach and impact, ensuring that more women have the opportunity to access the resources and support they need to thrive.

Welcoming our new trustee: Alison Kuiper

We are thrilled to welcome Alison Kuiper to our board as Trustee, sitting within the Governance & Finance portfolios.

Alison’s career in education has, from the beginning, had a focus on enhancing the lives of women. She taught and established polytechnic courses for women, which encouraged them to extend their horizons. A trained teacher, Alison has held lecturing and management positions at Christchurch Polytechnic, Lincoln University and The University of Sydney. Her doctorate in educational sociology investigated opportunities for those returning to further education, continuing her passion for improving opportunities for learning. Her previous experience as a member of boards, includes those of National Advisory Council on Women and Ako Aotearoa. She is excited to be able to continue to contribute through NHWT:HK.
