August is an exciting time at New Horizons for Women Trust. With our awards now open, we are already seeing an increase in applications year on year and we’ve also seen applications from parts of the country that we haven’t seen before – all great things!
This year, we have over $135,000 worth of awards to give away to deserving wāhine, which without our wonderful sponsors, partners, donors and trustees would not be possible. Thank you to you all.
We are currently focussing on promoting our awards far and wide, we know there are still so many deserving wāhine that aren’t aware of the awards and are asking for your help.
Ways you can get involved;
- Share this newsletter with friends, family and work colleagues
- Share our social content, and follow us if you aren’t already:
- Make contact with us if you think there is a group that we should get in touch with
We look forward to keeping you updated as we work through the awards season. Thank you for your continued support of New Horizons for Women Trust.

Welcome to our New Trustees
|
We welcome three new trustees, Karen Shepard, Marie Schmidt, and Margot van de Water, to the New Horizons for Women: Hine Kahukura team. We are already benefitting from their diverse expertise. Here's a little about them.
Nau mai ki to tatou kapa.

Karen Shepard
Karen has dedicated nearly three decades to a career in the non-profit, NGO, and local government sectors.. She spent a decade co-owning her own marketing and communication enterprise, offering essential services lsuch as strategic marketing, branding, and fundraising assistance to both emerging businesses and non-profit entities. Presently, she is engaged in the healthcare sector, focusing on the elderly population.
Originally from Taranaki and presently residing on the Canterbury Plains, Karen's greatest joys include tending to her garden, taking pottery classes, time with friends and family, and being surrounded by her assortment of rescued animals.

Marie Schmidt
Marie Schmidt is from West Auckland and is of Samoan and Tongan ethnicity and a lot of other mixes ie German, Irish, South African etc but surprisingly recently discovered by DNA that she is also part Maori.
|
Marie is currently the National Treasurer of the national women’s Pacific collective called “PACIFICA Inc” and as she travels regularly to Wellington is a member of the PACIFICA West Auckland Branch and the Whitireia Branch in Porirua.
Marie is on the committee of the Auckland Government Women’s Network (AGWN) and has been a co-opted committee member for the Porirua Pasifika Community Patrol since 2017. Marie worked for the Ministry of Social Development for 34 years and in March 2023 started working at the Ministry of Housing, Urban and Development (HUD) as a Principal Advisor. She has experience in governance, being on reference and advisory groups, developing strategies and programmes and has extensive relationships with Pacific communities across Aotearoa, New Zealand. Marie also mentors at least two young Pacific women from the government sector each year.
Her outside interests are staring at her idle motorbike and E-bike, swimming lengths at the pools to de-stress, attending church events and supporting her favourite rugby team, THE BLUES.

Margot van de Water
Margot is the Financial Controller for Tāwhiri Festivals and Experiences, based in Pōneke. Originally from Ōtautahi, Margot graduated from the National Academy of Singing and Dramatic Arts (NASDA) in 2014, and then pursued further study in business management and accounting and graduated with a Masters in Professional Accounting from the University of Canterbury in 2016.
