Inspiring women to create their new horizons through education and research

Mai i te kōpae ki te urupā, tātou ako tonu ai

From the cradle to the grave, we are forever learning

With the first month of winter behind us, July marks the opening of our 2023 awards season. As some of you will be aware we have changed our timeline for awards to align more accurately with the academic year.

With that we hope to make the awards and scholarships more sustainable and accessible to the women who need them the most. For those women who are thinking about applying to one of our many awards, I hope the below tips help if you’re struggling to write your story.

  • Showcase your growth and development: Share your journey of personal and professional growth.
  • Articulate your passion and purpose: Clearly convey your passion for your work and how it aligns with the mission and values of the award or organization. Show how your dedication and commitment have been instrumental in driving your mahi.
  • Share your personal journey: including any challenges you have faced, turning points, and moments of triumph. A well-crafted narrative can leave a lasting impression.

Each of these points will help panellists see the wahine behind the words on the screen.

I can’t wait to see the applications that come through and watch the unravelling of a new chapter at New Horizons for Women: Hine Kahukura.

Sponsor Spotlight: Association for Women in the Sciences (AWIS)

The New Zealand Association for Women in the Sciences Incorporated was founded in Wellington in 1985. They have a vision of a New Zealand where those who identify as woman are fairly represented throughout the science system, with pay equity and with policies that encourage the advancement of women in science. To achieve this vision, AWIS  helps to develop science careers by offering awards and scholarships for women in the sciences; provides advocacy through making submissions to government on policy; and connects women in sciences by hosting networking events.
