Inspiring women to create their new horizons through education and research

Ehara taku toa i te toa takitahi, engari he toa takitini

Success is not mine alone, but it is the work of many

Over the past few weeks our major focus has been on celebrating the success of award recipients for the 2023 year. Many reflections shared at our award ceremonies in Wellington, Tokoroa, Christchurch and Auckland included acknowledgement of whanau, friends, mentors, teachers and award sponsors who supported awardees along their education pathway.

We were also privileged to hear directly from award sponsors about their “why” and many spoke of struggles to achieve their own educational goals and aspirations.

For Trustees, Awards officers and panelists who willingly volunteer their time, it was also an opportunity to reinforce the value of their contribution and encouragement for us all to think about how we can do more.

Implementation of a strength-based approach and a simplified application process resulted in over 734 applications being received in 2023 and only a small proportion of these  (13) were ineligible. This is a huge improvement on previous years. We have identified particular demand in degree level and research applications and would be happy to follow up on any sponsorship opportunities.

A message that the Trust received from event attendees is the importance of maintaining our connections through consistent communication. It was lovely to catch up with past Chairs, Trustees and organisations who set the foundations of New Horizons for Women Trust: Hine Kahukura and remain our most ardent advocates.

To Ani and Amanda (our operations team) and the “unseen hands” (children and partners) who helped out, my thanks and appreciation.

What a team effort from all the moving parts!

Ngā whakawhetai

Award Ceremonies

During February and March, we celebrated with our awardees, sponsors and friends at ceremonies in Auckland, Tokoroa, Wellington and Christchurch.

It was an honour to meet the amazing women who received awards. Each had a unique story that inspired us to keep up our mahi - and inspired other awardees to keep going on their study journey.

Award Sponsorship

Each year, we award more than 50 awards/scholarships with a total value of more than $120,000. Awards have a significant impact on the lives of the award recipients - Here's what some of our awardees have said about our awards.

"This award not only helps with the cost of study but also encourages my children to work hard – to do their best in their studies. Since I am a role model for my children who admire me for my commitment towards my study – self-determination and hard work." Anonymous recipient of the Refugee Study Award sponsored by Graduate Women Manawatu Charitable Trust

"If it had not been for receiving this award, I would have struggled to pay my fees and would not have been able to enroll in next year’s study to complete my social work degree. It has taken a huge burden off my shoulders financially." Ebonie-Jane Nathan, recipient fo the Ted Athy Degree Award

"The award felt like a vote of confidence for me while I undertake the challenge of studying to be a nurse and raise my kids. The award has helped to support me while I am on full time clinical placement and unable to work. It has made the day to day juggle of paying bills and weekly expenses a bit easier for myself and my whānau over this study year" Kathy Bartlett, recipient of a Degree Award sponsored by an Anonymous donor.
